Spend the summer studying Korean language and culture in South Korea’s second-largest city, Busan. With beaches, mountains and urban areas, Busan boasts a little bit of everything, including one of the top 100 universities in Asia, Pusan National University (PNU). Choose to stay either three weeks or five weeks in an engaging Korean studies class learning the language as well as about the country’s history and culture. (Students studying for five weeks choose an additional elective course as well.) Take class Monday through Thursday, then head out on organized field trips on Friday and over the weekend for a thoroughly immersive learning experience.

Choose from a 5-week program (6 credits) or a 3-week program (3 credits). Both programs include a Korean Culture and Language class while students on the 5-week program can choose an additional course (see below)

TEAN Orientation

Jump into your new life in South Korea with a TEAN Orientation program in Seoul – the country’s capital as well as its cultural and economic center. While staying in a hotel in Insadong, one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods, you’ll meet their fellow TEAN classmates while discovering some of Seoul’s most interesting sites, Korea’s intriguing culture and the delicious cuisine. At the end of the three days, you’ll travel to Busan for a city tour and to get settled into your new home for the summer.

PNU’s on-campus dormitories offer all you need in the heart of student life including easy access to a shuttle bus that goes around the campus, a fitness center, laundry room, 24-hour convenience store and cafeteria (your meal plan is even included in the program cost!). Student housing is simple but modern with double room units featuring two twin beds, two desks, shared bathroom. PNU dormitories have separate buildings for male and female students. (Please note that guests of the opposite sex are not allowed to visit.)

TEAN’s Summer in Busan program is divided into two sessions. Students can choose to join either the first session, which is five weeks long and includes a Korean Language & Culture class plus one academic course in English, OR the second session, which is three weeks long and only includes the Korean Language & Culture course. Classes are held Monday through Thursday with field trips on Fridays and weekends. Students will enroll in their course(s) during the application process.

Each course is worth 3 PNU credits, which typically transfers back as 3 U.S. semester credits or 4.5 quarter credits. The participant’s home university will ultimately determine credit transfer and approval.

Pusan National University will release the summer course list around 2-3 months prior to the program start. Course availability is based on enrollment numbers and scheduling. All students should seek pre-approval for alternate courses in the event of last-minute class cancellations.

Busan Tip
Jagalchi Fish Market

Many people visit Jagalchi Fish Market, but few are brave enough to try the raw seafood. If you order seafood in a restaurant in Jagalchi, they will most likely cook your food for you fresh…so fresh, in fact, that you’ll see it wriggle in the pan! Popular dishes are octopus and eel.

Busan Tip
Gyeongju Day Trip

My favorite day trip from Busan is going to Gyeongju, Korea’s ancient capital that’s only an hour away by bus. Gyeongju is a small town with plenty of places to explore. The ancient observatory called Cheomsongdae and the gorgeous Donggung Palace, a temple that sits atop Wolji Pond, are my personal favorites.
