How to finance and pay for your study abroad program

Finances are an important factor when it comes to planning for study abroad. Our team can help advise on program costs and scholarships through TEAN. If you’ll be using financial aid for the program, you will likely also need to meet with your home university.

Financial Aid

Start by meeting with your home university study abroad office to see if your financial aid and scholarships can be used on a TEAN study abroad program. We can accept any aid or scholarships you can get approved. We have special billing agreements with some universities and your study abroad office can let you know if this would be the case for you. If your school doesn’t have a billing agreement with TEAN, you will need to make a payment directly to TEAN. Often federal aid can be used to pay for our programs, but sometimes university-specific aid and scholarships won’t transfer.

TEAN offers scholarships, as do many of our host university partners, that we encourage you to apply for. All the information on TEAN Scholarships, deadlines and how to apply can be found here.

There are also a number of external scholarships you may be eligible to apply for. Check with your home university study abroad office and major department to see if they offer any scholarships you’re eligible for. You can also find some recommendations on our website here under external scholarships.

Deposits and Payments

A program deposit will be due shortly after you complete your online program application. You’ll be assigned a TEAN Program Manager who will notify you by email and you’ll also receive an invoice by email.

Final payments for the program are due prior to departure. Your final program invoice will indicate when payment is due. If your financial aid will be released later than this date, you can either pay out of pocket and use your financial as a refund or complete an agreement with us that outlines when the aid will be released and when payment will be made.

Depending on your program, TEAN offers payment plans if you would like to pay your final invoice in installments prior to departure. Ask your TEAN Program Manager about setting this up for your program or contact us to learn more.

You can submit your program deposit and excursion payments by credit card on our website. Final invoices can be paid by check or wire transfer.

Withdrawal and refund policies vary by program. Each program has a set withdrawal date where you can choose to withdraw by and receive a refund, except for the $95 application deposit.

Included Costs

There are certain items that are always included in TEAN study abroad program costs, such as your medical insurance, tuition, included cultural events, orientation program, the services of our in-country local staff in all locations and all pre-departure advising. Airfare, meals and your visa are typically not included in the total program cost unless indicated otherwise. We list out what’s included and not included in each program cost on the program page under the fees section.
