Program Details
Housing
Students studying at La Trobe University live on campus within a vibrant residential community of local and international students. The co-ed dorms with men and women living in adjacent rooms include fully furnished, single bedrooms with shared bathrooms. Students can also access common spaces, like a large lounge, recreational rooms, indoor games area, barbecue, study rooms, library, health sciences study room, and coin-operated laundry facilities. Rent, utilities, WiFi, and bed linens are also included. Housing is available with either a partial meal plan providing daily breakfast and dinner or a self-catered (no meal plan) option.
TEAN Staff
Our team works with you start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in Australia, you will meet our team who will provide assistance during your time in-country. Throughout your semester you will meet with the Melbourne Resident Director for informal discussions and excursions. Our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

Events & Excursions
Activities / Immersion
Our local staff arrange various activities during the semester designed to help immerse you in the local culture. These activities are included in your semester program. In addition, if you have a specific interest or hobby, your Melbourne-based TEAN Resident Director will be able to point you in the right direction. Below are examples of previous activities arranged for students. Note that activities change each semester.
In addition to the TEAN-organized events, to make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunities, our local staff send out frequent emails letting you know what is happening in Melbourne. Ranging from community events to music festivals, we tap you into the local culture right from the start.
Melbourne walking tour
Included within the first few weeks after arriving in Melbourne, we walk and jump on trams all over the city, clueing you into the local secrets. Melbourne’s city center is made up of winding bylanes, and it’s here where you find unique cafes, bars, restaurants and galleries. We’ll also explore Melbourne’s urban villages, ending the day in an iconic locals-only venue for dinner. This day will set you up with the knowledge you need to make the most of your time in this great city.
Aussie Rules Football match
There is no sporting event that gets the sports-mad Victorian more vocal than the Aussie Rules Football match. Australian Rules football began in Victoria in the 1850s, predating American football, rugby and soccer. It’s not like other football types, the best explanation is to experience a game yourself. We see a game between two local rivals, and sample a local culinary favorite – the meat pie! It’s the hot dog equivalent of the Australian spectator sporting experience.
Local original live music
Melbourne is known for its local, live music scene and excellent intimate venues. We make sure students get to experience becoming part of a local crowd by heading to a show of an Australian band at an incredible venue. If you have a music genre preference, let your local staff know and we’ll try to accommodate your request – or at least give you some recommendations to check out on your own!

Browse up Chapel Street
Chapel Street runs the length of a number of suburbs but it is the end that runs through Windsor, Prahran, South Yarra and Toorak that are the most interesting. Grab a coffee and start at Windsor Station, then walk north through Prahran past funky café’s, cool hip restaurants, vintage clothing stores and bars full of locals. As you make your way through South Yarra and Toorak, the vibe changes to include fancy restaurants, an art house cinema, boutique designer stores and plenty of locals sipping on lattes.

Right next to the University of Melbourne in the heart of Carlton is Lygon Street, Melbourne’s Little Italy. Lined with pizzerias, pasta bars, café’s and gelato stores, Lygon Street is worth a visit if you want some hearty Italian food. Walking up Lygon Street, restaurant hosts will entice you in as they share their menu, however the Italian loving locals will all agree that Tiamos is the place to go.
Q&A
What inspired you to pursue your masters degree in Sustainability?
My mom instilled me in from an extremely young age that the natural environment, along with all of the wild species that call it home, are the most important pieces to our ecosystem and that we should respect them deeply. Thankfully, after an academic career based around environmental science, one buzzword kept coming back into my life that encompassed everything that I stood for – sustainability – and I jumped at the opportunity to pursue a masters degree in a field that combines the preservation of our natural environment while also factoring in the needs of human beings.
In what ways is study abroad tied to sustainability?
Studying abroad gives students an opportunity to live their life in an environment which differs from the one in which they were raised. Some students may find themselves in situations where they are very pleased with the pro-environmental initiatives in their host country…or shocked by the lack of. It is an opportunity to understand the reasonings behind the host country’s practices and either take those green initiatives back home with them or to educate yourself more on the obstacles that the host country is facing that perhaps is keeping them from taking their next steps towards a sustainable future.
What are some small and big ways students can Choose Earth while abroad?
The beauty of sustainability is that small-scale efforts are the building blocks to large-scale changes and there are plenty of ways that students can make green choices while studying abroad including; choosing public transportation or walking, using reusable water bottles, grocery bags and utensils instead of single-use items, turning off lights, air conditioning and electrical appliances while not in your housing, making an effort to eat locally-produced foods that are in-season and taking your own reusable food container when ordering food to go, offsetting your airline carbon credits and ensure that any animal or nature preserve visits outside of TEAN’s planned activities are legitimately ethically sound places and not tourist traps that harm animals or the natural environment – do research online and ask around.
What is your favorite travel quote?
“Take only memories, leave only footprints” is a quote that I live by while traveling. To me, fully taking in and appreciating a moment so that I have a solid memory of a trip is more important than any picture or souvenir. It is important to not leave any human impressions on the natural environment that you explore while abroad so future generations of all species can live in harmony with the land.
If you were going to study on a TEAN program tomorrow, where would you go?
I would definitely choose one of the New Zealand programs. I have a huge admiration for the country’s sustainability initiatives and how they are moving at such a fast rate towards cutting their carbon footprint – they are a great example for other countries to follow! I also want to experience its spectacular natural settings and landscapes.
