Now in its 20th year, Sculpture by the Sea is one of Sydney’s key annual arts events, drawing more than 500,000 to the 2km coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama to enjoy site-specific sculptures by top artists and emerging talents from Australia and abroad.

Night Noodle Markets [FREE entry]

October is Good food Month in Sydney, one of its highlights being the Night Noodle Markets. Hyde Park becomes home to an Asian hawker market of food stalls and a summer festival atmosphere of outdoor dining and socializing. This year’s event will be cash-free. Australian Life [FREE]

Australian Life is an outdoor photography exhibition in Hyde Park that celebrates Australia’s diversity & complexity. It showcases 22 images taken across Australia by both the general public & professional photographers.

The Spring Social [$95]

Sculptural installation @ Royal Botanic Gardens [FREE]
When: Oct 22 – 23 from 7am – 5pm
Where: Royal Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquarie’s Rd.
Jonathan Jones is an Indigenous Australian artist whose sculptural installation titled Barrangal dyara means ‘skin & bones’ in his native language. The artwork was commissioned by Kaldor Public Art Projects after Jones submitted his idea as part of their Very Good Idea initiative in 2014 – an open call-out to Australian artists for public art ideas. The 15,000 white ceramic shields occupy roughly 20,000 square-metres of the garden. Jones’s installation is a response to the destruction by fire of the Royal Botanic Garden’s 19th century Garden Palace, and its collection of culturally significant Indigenous objects and artefacts, in 1882.

Secret Bondi Cave Party

The Bondi Cave Party will be located in a secret setting which will be released to a limited number of guests. There will be gorgeous waterfront views, beach vibes & good tunes by Brazilian DJs. Make sure you request the location early for your chance to attend, you can invite your friends to improve your chances of receiving the location.

Sydney Craft Beer Week
When: Oct 21 – 30
Where: Around Sydney
More than 100 events at 75 venues are planned for Craft Beer Week this October. Some highlights include axe-throwing competitions, chocolate desserts matched with beers, hangover-curing breakfasts, sausage-making classes, beer awards, golf and more. Six pubs will give their taps over to each of the six Australian states for Pint of Origin in order to showcase each region’s craft beers. Frankie’s Pizza is having a free Beer and Pizza night, and history buffs can take a drinkable journey through time at Beer Through the Ages: A Beer History Experience. There will be two sessions of the Opening Night Gala at Giant Dwarf in Redfern, where a showcase of the week’s beers will be available for tasting.

Freda’s is an awesome bar which is worth checking out regardless of whether it is hosting an event or not. After pARTY is one of many events held at Freda’s and is curated by a different artist/collective each month. The first Wednesday of the month being a opening date for lots of local galleries, it seems a logical excuse for a post-opening after party.

Wollongong Film Festival [$9.45 – 19.95]

Where: Project Contemporary Art Space, 255 Keira Street
Wollongong Film Festival is in its Inaugural year, offering established and emerging filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their various talents. This years festival is about celebrating Women in Film both on and off screen with all proceeds going to One Girl www.onegirl.org.au. It is about giving a voice to Women Filmmakers and a voice to Women’s stories.

Nan Tien Temple [$4]
When: Tuesday – Sunday from 9am – 5pm
Where: 180 Berkeley Rd, Berkeley
The Nan Tien Temple is the largest buddhist temple complex in the southern hemisphere. It is located on the southern outskirts of Wollongong and accessible via train or bus. You can do a guided tour at 1pm on a Saturday for $4. There is a vegetarian restaurant and on the 12th June you can participate in a cooking workshop.

Wollongong Beach Netball [$50]
When: Oct 14-15
Where: Located on the foreshore in front of the Surf Club – the surf club is located on Cliff Rd, near the corner of Blacket St, North Wollongong
Beach Netball is played on half size courts on the sand, ensuring low impact and lots of fun. It’s a weekend event that consists of a NETFIT workout on the friday (optional) and a full day Tournament on the Saturday. The Official Beach Party will be kicking off on Saturday night following competition. All registered players receive free entry into the Beach Party and guest tickets can be purchased to share the love. The night will be headlined by one of the best international DJ’s in town.

Mid Week Meat Feast

Every Wednesday night, The Meatery hosts an all you can eat buffet. It includes a selection of juicy ribs and other delicious meat cuts, tasty salads, veggies, baked baguette and the famous Meatery steak fries!

Real Film Festival

The Real Film Festival is a three-day community, arts and Industry event showcasing documentaries, independent short and feature films based on true stories. The program comprises of film screenings, film and photography workshops, panel discussions, networking events and film competitions for filmmakers of all ages and experience. The Festival will be held in Newcastle across a number of venues within the city, including Tower Cinemas, Newcastle Museum, Honeysuckle Hotel, Newcastle Film and Media School, Limelight Studios and Civic Park.  The Festival Program includes a variety of entertainment including the Opening Night Gala held at Tower Cinemas with a party to follow at the Honeysuckle Hotel. The Festival will also deliver an Open Air Cinema in Civic Park, film screenings at Tower Cinema and short film screenings at Newcastle Museum and a variety of other locations.

Fernleigh 15 Funrun [From $40]
When: Sunday, Oct 23 from 8am-12pm
The Lake Macquarie Fernleigh 15 is a 15km fun run on the Fernleigh Track as part of the Run NSW Fun Run Series. The Fernleigh track is a discussed railway line that has been upgraded to a state of the art running/walking and cycling track. It is fully sealed and takes runners from the heart of Adamstown, a suburb of Newcastle, through ever changing scenery to Belmont which sits between Lake Macquarie and the ocean. This is the only chance to run on the iconic Fernleigh track which will be closed to all other traffic. The course is a certified 15K by Athletics NSW.

Melbourne Festival [FREE and ticketed events]

Where: Various venues around the city
Melbourne Festival is one of Australia’s flagship international arts festivals and one of the major multi-arts festivals of the world, in terms of quality of work, innovation of vision, scale and breadth of program. Each Festival brings an unparalleled feast of dance, theatre, music, visual arts, multimedia and outdoor events from renowned and upcoming Australian and International companies and artists to Melbourne. There is two big free events that I recommend – Tanderrum, which opens the festival by bringing the five indigenous clans of Victoria together and Les Tambours De Feu an outdoor event at Fed Square held during the first weekend of the festival.

Stanley Kubrick Film Festival [$15.50]
When: Oct 6-19
Where: Cinema Nova, Lygon Street, Carlton
Cinema Nova is celebrating the work of one of history’s most influential filmmakers. American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) crafted some of the best films of the 20th century, from the poetic sci-fi puzzle 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) to the highly unsettling dystopia A Clockwork Orange (1971) and the psychological horror The Shining (1980). This October, Cinema Nova will screen Melbourne’s largest-ever number of Kubrick films in one festival event, starting with Dr. Strangelove and running through Full Metal Jacket, Lolita, Eyes Wide Shut and more.

Melbourne Salami Festival [$15]
When: Oct 8-9
Where: Northcote Town Hall, High Street, Northcote
One thing’s for sure, Melbournians love our salami! Last year, the annual Salami Festa drew more than 6,000 people to the Northcote Town Hall, where punters sampled more than 30,000 slices of homemade salami. Back for its fifth year, the festival will run for an extra day. The big competition for the best salami is back and you can expect tastings, a day and night market, and demonstrations for budding salami artists. Live music will be your soundtrack to this much-loved festival.

The Malaysia Street Festival [FREE]
When: Oct 9
Where: Queen Victoria Market
The Malaysia Street Festival at the Queen Victoria Market showcases authentic Malaysian food, as well as dishes influenced by the Japanese, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese. Adults and children alike can also enjoy a taste of Malaysian culture and games with activities including a game of congkak, henna art, sarong tying, balloon making and cultural performances.

Hey Girl [$12 for students]

The Wheeler Centre celebrates girlhood with a series of talks to explore the world through a feminist lens. What defines girlhood? What challenges does a woman face regarding race, identity and sexuality? How is the definition of girlhood changing? What does mental health and development mean to a woman? What can be said of the role of social media and the representation of girls in media and in fiction? How can we smash the obstacles faced by the women of today and tomorrow?

The Docklands Blues Music Festival [FREE]

Winter is coming. You might draw the line at attending a medieval fair, but if you’ve been hankering to crack out your best Winterfell inspired outfit, or roll like Brienne of Tarth, here’s your chance. Everyone’s favourite sled-carrying, door-holding giant and sometimes DJ Kristian Nairn aka Hodor, is coming to Melbourne for Rave of Thrones. He’s bringing a set of deep house to Trak in October and you’re all expected to come in your Westerosi best.

Say Cheese Festival [FREE]

The Prahran Market’s annual cheese festival is beautiful in its simplicity. An entire day dedicated to the dreamiest dairy product humanity has created, where restaurants, chefs and local makers are invited to showcase their wares to hoards of cheese fans. What more do you need in life? Back for its fourth year, the Say Cheese Festival is bigger than ever, with more than double the number of exhibitors spilling out from the market and onto Elizabeth Street and the market mezzanine. The brie-lience of this cheese festival should not be understated.

Did you love Stranger Things as much as I did? Are you mourning the loss of Barb? Then dive into the Upside Down and embrace the stranger things this Halloween. LuxLumin – Lighting up the City [FREE]

Where: On Buildings at 21 sites across the Townsville City Business District
For the second time, the Townsville community will have the opportunity to participate in an event which is hard to overlook. Luxlumin – lighting up the city, will transform the Central Business District into an outdoor gallery as the streets and buildings are covered with light, colour and moving images. Luxlumin will combine digital mapping, lighting design and live performance on 21 sites in the Townsville Central Business District to commemorate Townsville’s 150th anniversary. The history of heritage listed buildings and the stories of the people who occupied them will be revealed through projection and theatre as a celebration of our rich and diverse history.

Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase [$35.90]

A showcase of the funnies comedians from this year’s Sydney Comedy Festival are hitting the road and headed for Townsville! T150 Defence Force Air Show and Townsville Bulletin Sky Show [FREE]
When: Oct 15 from 10am – 8:30pm
Where: The Strand, Townsville
The air and sky show will kick off with a rare opportunity to see all units of the Royal Australian Air Force Base exercise their Freedom of Entry to the City of Townsville. A parade will commence at 10am from Strand Park and conclude at ANZAC Park. There will also be other entertainment including live performances and food stalls, with the main stage at Strand Park and smaller stage at the Gregory Street Amphitheatre. After dusk there will also be a fireworks display lighting up the sky to conclude the event.
